Pakistani Minister Suspect in Diamond Smuggling Case
A Pakistani minister is suspected of being involved in smuggling diamonds into the country after he picked up the luggage of two inbound passengers, using his authority to bypass a customs check.
The Punjab Prisons Minister, Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor, last Tuesday took the luggage of the two passengers arriving at Lahore airport from Thailand. According to customs officials, they had received a tip off that a passenger on that flight was carrying diamonds.
“The minister got furious and threatened the officials of dire consequences when he was informed that passengers coming from Thailand and Far Eastern countries could not use the facility of Green Channel and their luggage had to be scanned," a customs official told Press Trust of India.
The incident prompted the formation of a three-member committee headed by a former high ranking police inspector to investigate the charges. In the meantime, Ghafoor has been suspended from his duties.
